Selecting a Remodeler

Selecting the right remodeler is an important decision since it is one of the largest investments other than purchasing a home. And unlike new construction, you will be living in the home during the remodeling process. So you will want to work with someone who is aware of your needs. Develop a list of questions you want to ask when you interview a potential remodeler. -

  • Be sure to include questions about planning and design.
  • Ask for a copy of their insurance.
  • Ask to see their state license.
  • Ask which part of the project is done by subcontract.
  • Ask how they propose setting up dust control.
  • Ask to see a generic contract.
  • Ask for referrals and then check them out.
  • Project Management: ask about frequency of project updates.
  • Check out similar completed projects.
  • Go to the remodeler’s website to see before and after pictures of completed projects.

The bottom line is to select a contractor you feel comfortable talking to. You need to be able to point out things that you need changed. The reality with remodeling is that things can go wrong. You need to be able to have those tough conversations with the remodeler you choose. That is not always an easy thing to do.
